OUR MISSION

Motorsports Ministries desires to serve in an attempt to help meet some of the many needs that continuously challenge the Motorsports community.

SUMMARY

Motorsports Ministries is an organization conceived, developed and operated to help provide for the various physical, spiritual and emotional needs of the professional and amateur sportscar racing community. This community includes the teams, drivers and their families. It also includes those working within the sanctioning body, varying track personnel, emergency and medical workers, corner workers, vendors, sponsors and our fans.

The ministry strives to bring balance and perspective, providing ministry and encouragement to the entire racing community whether they are followers of Jesus or not. The ministry is also considered non-denominational as we are not supported by, nor do we promote, one specific denomination. It is common for our chaplains to engage relationally with people within the racing community that have connections to various denominations from their past and present experiences.

Typically, Motorsports Ministries provides chapel services during the race weekend, invocations upon request from the track or sanctioning body, prayer at driver, team manager, safety crew and corner worker meetings. We’re also in communication with the sanctioning body or the track care center to follow up on any injuries to those in the racing community that are involved in various accidents. We’re frequently called on to follow up with a phone call or even a local visit to a race team or shop that’s lost a team member from an accident or illness.

Aside from the planned activities of the ministry, it’s always amazing when we’re given those “God moments” that we didn’t have scheduled but just seem to happen as we’re going about our days at the track. They frequently happen at the track, hotel, dinner, at the airport, on a flight, random places with powerful opportunities to reflect the love, wisdom and life of a very personal relational God. We also provide counseling, encourage fellowship and provide other pastoral ministry to everyone in the community. From all of the services we provide, our hope is that individuals within the racing community would be enriched spiritually as they pursue their own passions for auto racing.

Richard Anderson founded Motorsport Ministries in 1984 in response to a desire by participants in various auto racing series to increase the fellowship of other Christians and have their needs for pastoral care met while engaging in following a racing circuit for many weeks during the course of every year. Richard ministered to a wide cross section of people within the racing community from the beginnings of the ministry to his passing in 2014. His successor, Terry Borcheller, has continued in his footsteps— continuing to minister to all walks of life within this incredibly diverse community. Professional Sportscar racing is predominantly where you’ll find fingerprints of Motorsports Ministries, but we’ve also been involved with amateur sportscar racing, historic and vintage, TransAm, Indycar and other forms of auto racing. Motorsports Ministries has also brought teens and others to the environment of auto racing through different discipleship programs that have not only proven successful to spiritually benefit those involved, but have also opened career opportunities within this same environment in which they were introduced.

Over the years, the ministry has been able to recognize and fulfill needs as they have occurred. This continued expansion of the scope of Motorsport Ministries has been facilitated by numerous supporters who have come alongside to share in the ministry with their finances, prayers and encouragement.

The Lord has been very faithful to provide every need the ministry has had from its beginning in 1984 until today. The racing communities we serve have been the primary resource for the continued operation of the ministry.

The fact that the ministry not only has continued for as long as it has, but that we continue to operate debt-free and expand is a great indicator of the value that the auto racing community has placed on Motorsports Ministries and its continued mission.

Motorsports Ministries is a 501 3C corporation, and all contributions go toward continuing the ministry and are tax deductible.

OUR FOUNDER

Richard Anderson | Founder

Richard Anderson founded Motorsports Ministries in 1984. Richard loved God, family, people and racing. When asked why he thought it was a good idea to have a ministry that was centered around the loud, busy and sometimes crazy environment of a racetrack, he said “Because there’s people there.” With a big-as-life stature but unassuming calm demeanor, Richard wanted to be where the people were, in particular, “the racers”! His incredibly simple but powerful and concise messages at the track are still producing fruit long past his death in 2014. Rich was faithful, a staple in the racing community, specifically professional sportscar racing. His impact was even experienced by those who didn’t believe the same as he did. Someone who had never attended one of his chapel services mourned his passing and stated that the racetrack would never be the same without Richard. They were right. Once when I asked Richard how he kept from getting discouraged when the chapel was poorly attended, he matter of factly said, “The chapel service is a very small part of what I do here.” That was profound for me. Little did I know I would come to understand what he meant by that with the practical experience of following in his footsteps.

Richard will forever be missed, and I’m grateful for his years of service to the racing community.

He was my pastor, my friend, a racing fan, and a true fan of the racing community.
